OVERVIEW:

Training is designed by industry & delivered by industry!!  In an effort to help close the skilled trades gap in the Machine, Tool, Die & Mould (MTDM) sector, the Canadian Tooling & Machining Association (CTMA) is pleased to be continuing the innovative Introductory Trades Training Program to help employers create another 100+ new positions for youth (ages 18-29) who are Residents of Ontario and have the right attitude & aptitude to work in the MTDM industry.  This year, the program will feature a new 42-week Earn While You Learn Stream.  The program provides youth participants with an opportunity to gain hands-on experience and receive an hourly wage while they are training.  Four additional intakes are being offered that start in February, June, September & December 2016.

PROGRAM FOCUS:

  • Create 100+ new positions for youth (aged 18 to 29) through 4 intakes in the MTDM sector
  • Youth earn $12 per hour during training (typically 40 hours per week)
  • Youth are supplied with new safety boots/shoes, safety glasses, and a toolbox with the necessary hand tools including micrometers, a vernier, Allen keys, indicators, mallets, etc.
  • Introductory Trades Training (ITT) Stream includes 6 weeks of in-class workplace readiness training at the Valiant Training & Development Centre & 26 weeks shop-floor training with a local employer
  • ITT Employers receive $8,000 in funding to help offset their training costs
  • Earn While You Learn (EWYL) Stream includes 42 weeks of in-class &  shop floor training at the Valiant Training & Development Centre

HOW THE INTRODUCTORY TRADES TRAINING (ITT) STREAM WORKS:

  • Eligible youth are pre-screened by the Employment Assessment Center, the Valiant Training & Development Centre, and the CTMA to ensure they have the appropriate attitude & aptitude to work in the MTDM sector.
  • Companies interview the pre-screened youth & select their trainee(s) for the ITT stream.
  • Selected youth receive 6 weeks of introductory instruction at the Valiant Training & Development Centre to ensure they are workplace ready.  This in-class training includes health & safety training, technical math, blueprint reading, measuring & some other basic shop-floor skills.
  • Companies provide youth with 26 weeks of shop-floor training to industry-defined Technical Learning Outcomes & receive up to $8,000* in funding support.
  • Youth earn $12/hr. (minimum) for the 32-week ITT stream.
  • CTMA regularly monitors training progress and provides assistance throughout the program.
  • Successful youth receive a certificate of completion from the CTMA.
  • Permanent employment is offered to youth that successfully complete the program.

HOW THE EARN WHILE YOU LEARN (EWYL) STREAM WORKS:

  • Selected youth receive 42 weeks of intensive training at the Valiant Training & Development Centre.
  • Youth earn $12/hr. (minimum) for the 42-week EWYL stream.
  • CTMA regularly monitors training progress and provides assistance throughout the program.
  • Successful youth receive a certificate of completion from the CTMA.
  • Graduates will be production ready employees available for permanent employment.

PROGRAM RESULTS:

Since its inception in 2014, 85 youth have successfully completed the program and been permanently hired within the MTDM sector in Ontario.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE:

  • Youth (18 to 29 years of age) who are Residents of Ontario.
  • Machine, Tool, Die & Mould Companies located in Ontario.

WHAT PARTICIPATING COMPANIES WILL RECEIVE:

  • ITT Participating Companies will receive up to $8,000 in funding support to help offset their shop-floor training costs.
  • ITT Participating Companies will receive pre-screened trainees that have received 6 weeks of in-class instruction at the Valiant Training & Development Center (including health & safety training, technical math, blueprint reading, measuring & other basic shop-floor skills)
  • EWYL Participating Companies will receive pre-screened, young, eager, production-ready trained employees.
  • All Companies may also be eligible to receive additional wage subsidy funding under the Canada Ontario Jobs Grant or other similar government program.

REGISTRATION FEES:

CTMA, APMA/CAMM Member Companies –  $1,750 to $2,250*

Non-Member Companies    –  $2,750 to $3,250*

Youth Participants – n/a

* Companies pay a fee for each applicable youth participant trained.  Fees are dependent on the size of the company and are subject to HST.
